Modernist House, Birmingham
Modern Contemporary Family Home in a Conservation Area. The owner of the site wanted to redevelop and build a contemporary property on the site of the 1950s house
The new house is surrounded by Listed Buildings and occupies the site of former cottages that were converted into a single dwelling in the 1920s which in more recent times had fallen into decay.
The site was purchased by a private client who wanted to demolish the existing property and build a new house in traditional Cotswold style with traditional details. Additional land owned by the purchaser was added to the site which had wonderful views across a valley to the South.
The new house has 2 1/2 storeys plus a basement and was designed to look like a traditional farmhouse with a Regency style facade which looks over the rear garden and the valley beyond. The house was built using stone salvaged from the original cottages and has a new laid Cotswold stone slate roof.
The sash windows were detailed as traditional handmade windows and other windows on the house are in painted timber and oak casements. There are also some traditional style stone mullion windows with leaded light glazing.
The property is highly insulated and heated by a ground source heat pump.
Planning Consent was separately obtained for a Summer House and Car Barn.
Mike Lapworth is now working for new owners to build the Summer House and to improve and enhance the entrance to the property and the Car Barn, add a swimming pool and landscape the entire site to create a unique setting for the house.

The new house is in a Conservation Area and there are a number of Listed Arts and Crafts style houses on the Estate which was the style of architecture the owners wanted for their new home
