Cotswold Cottage Restored
Complete restoration and alteration of a large cottage in the Cotswolds and to build a new side extension and 2 new Conservatories to provide additional living accommodation
The house was built in 1861 by the notable Birmingham architect J A Chatwin for a German Silversmith based in the Jewellery Quarter.
Mike Lapworth was approached by the Senior Conservation Officer at Birmingham City Council in conjunction with Historic England to oversee the repairs and refurbishment of this Listed Building. Designed as a Gentleman’s Tudor House with Dutch Gables in 1861, it features stone detailing to parapets, gables and window and door surrounds.
This property required full repair and refurbishment of the building fabric in accordance with the rules set out by Historic England following the service of a Planning Enforcement Notice as all the interiors had been stripped out and a new extension had been built incorrectly. All elements had to be detailed and approved by Historic England and the Conservation Team at Birmingham City Council using traditional methods and materials.
Mike Lapworth obtained Planning and Listed Building Consent for a large rear extension designed and detailed to match the original house and separate Consent was obtained to reinstate a Conservatory in its original location. Planning and Listed Building Consent was obtained to restore the original Gatehouse, long drive and lamp fittings and a second gateway and driveway adjacent to the Lodge.
