Mike Lapworth attended the Award Ceremony at The Russells presided over by Wayne Hemmingway, Chair of the judges at CABE. The CABE award statement said “The people who’ve made this development happen are heroes. Good schemes need leadership and someone who cares – this has it in spades”
This sums up Mike Lapworth’s approach to design to a tee – always working hard to make the design fit the place, be special and of high quality.
Following the award ceremony Mike Lapworth was asked to give a talk about The Russells with Wayne Hemmingway & Gill Colin the Head of Planning at Wychavon District Council. The talk was to members of the Town Planning Institute and it was held at the Lygon Arms Hotel, which is next to the site and was once owned by the Russell Family.

CABE recognition of the high quality and sensitive design for the redevelopment of the site was included as an example of a very good design on Page 11 of the CABE Compendium Guide as a good example of Residential Design.
Mike Lapworth acting as a partner of The Lapworth Partnership achieved around 20 awards from the Birmingham Post Annual Awards for high quality design. All of the schemes were for Chase Homes during the period from 1990 to the early 2000s, as follows:

Metchley Lane – Redevelopment of former All Electric Garage site
Lickey Grange – Redevelopment of the former Lord Austin Estate which had been residential school for the Birmingham Royal Institute for the Blind since 1948 and was redeveloped after the school closed in the 1990s.
Loxley – Redevelopment of the former Brake Brothers Distribution Centre which relocated to a new site
The Russells, Broadway – Mixed use redevelopment of the former Gordon Russell Furniture factory which relocated to an industrial Estate in Worcester
Rose Road, Harborne – Redevelopment of a former Birmingham Council Works Department
Avenue Road, Dorridge – Apartment development
Alderbrook Road, Solihull – Housing Development
Henley in Arden – Redevelopment of the former Henley Ice Cream Factory, 2 other housing developments on High Street, Henley in Arden, Redevelopment of former factory site in Beaudesert Lane
Harborne -Another housing development in Metchley Lane, Housing development in Station Road, Axis development, redevelopment of the former large All Electric Garage site between High Street and and Greenfield Road.
Dorridge – Redevelopment of the Former Evesons Coal Yard which was previously a town gas store in Dorridge
Four Oaks – Apartment Development on Four Oaks Road
17, 18 & 19 Highfield Road, Edgbaston Redevelopment and refurbishment of three listed semi derelict office buildings for Calthorpe Estates.
The three Listed buildings were originally large houses which had been used as offices since the 1950s.
