INNER CITY BIRMINGHAM

  • Location: Birmingham
  • Sector: Residential
  • Status: Detail Application Stage
  • Type: Residential apartments & housing association accommodation
  • Service: Architecture
  • Client: Private Developer

Both of these large unusual and tricky sites are located within Birmingham

The first site is situated next to the Birmingham Loop Brindley Canal and is adjacent to the Thomas Telford designed dam to create the Edgbaston Reservoir which tops up the canal system. The entire site was covered by a factory complex created in the 1930s but earlier factory buildings on the site go back to the late 17th Century.

The apartments are proposed over a 2 storey underground car park and the design addresses two main streets and the canal.

Outline Planning consent has been obtained for over 260 apartments which either overlook the canal or a large landscaped central area. Also proposed are roof gardens to most of the development with some roofs covered in solar panels. Detail Application Design is now underway.

The second site was a large railway siding with buildings and a factory which operated from Victorian times until the late 1980s. The site was proposed for factory development and after following completion of the first phase it was abandoned as the scheme had not been successful. Outline consent has now been obtained for over 300 apartments and a large landscaped area for the use of the residents.
