  • Status: Completed
  • Type: Large detached Cotswold Barn, Conservation Area, Listed building
  • Service: Architecture and Interior

Completed in 2021 The Old Barn was designed in the style of a traditional Cotswold Barn

The new building stands on the site of the former Farm buildings belonging to a Grade II Listed Farmhouse and Courtyard of Outbuildings set in the heart of a village in a Conservation Area.

Mike Lapworth started working on the Restoration of the Grade II Listed House in 2007 and has since helped new owners to obtain Planning Consent to build a new Barn, stable block, greenhouse and a tennis court at the property.

An existing large converted barn which formerly provided garaging and garden storage was converted for habitable use. Mike Lapworth was commissioned to design a new ancillary building to provide this missing accommodation in a way that would readily complement the property and its village setting. The design solution was to build a new Cotswold barn in a traditional style to match the existing buildings on the site  within the Conservation Area.

Planning Consent was obtained and Mike Lapworth organised the build and designed the interior spaces using salvaged materials.

The walls were built with Cotswold stone from a demolished Manor house and the roof was clad in salvaged layered Cotswold stone slates. The accommodation included a garage, a garden room, a garden store, a home office and ancillary accommodation at first floor level. The building is highly insulated and incorporates modern building methods and structure disguised with salvaged materials.

The building is now called The Old Barn and is well integrated within the overall setting.

Mike Lapworth continues to work on the project and has recently been instructed to design and build a second barn structure to accommodate agricultural machinery.
