A modern extension and alterations to create a large kitchen /dining/ family room and utility area to a Grade II Listed house in Edgbaston
This interesting house was originally designed by the celebrated Welsh Architect Sir Clough Williams Ellis in 1924 as a Country House and Estate for one of the Chamberlain family. Originally the Estate included a Farm and covered 400 acres.
When the current owner purchased the house in 2002 the site had around 40 acres and included 2 stone entrance lodges, a garage building, a stone walled garden, extensive formal gardens and farm buildings.
Mike Lapworth was commissioned to build a 9000 ft² wing, designed in the style and detail of the original building. The space included a large drawing room, dining room and bar at ground floor level with a very large master bedroom suite and a further bedroom at first floor level.
In addition, a new country house entrance hall was added with an impressive staircase and the whole service wing was redesigned to create a large kitchen/dining/ family room with a new porch added on the access leading to the garage and walled garden area. All of the bedrooms were redesigned with ensuite bathrooms.
Externally the lodges, garage building and the walled garden were restored and Mike Lapworth designed a new Stable block, helicopter landing pad, field entrances and assisted with the landscaping of the extensive grounds.
The project had a special significance for Mike Lapworth who whilst a First Year student of Architecture at Nottingham University, had met Sir Clough Williams Ellis at a lecture by Buckminster Fuller. Sir Clough Williams Ellis was a notable architect second only to Sir Edwin Lutyens.
