The Russells was a redevelopment of the former Gordon Russell Furniture Factory in the centre of Broadway, next to the Lygon Arms Hotel. Chase Homes won the project with Mike Lapworth’s design in a competition.
The project was a mixed-use redevelopment of the factory site which included 6 Grade II Listed buildings totalling approx 30,000 ft². Mike Lapworth designed the overall redevelopment scheme which included 78 dwellings and restored/converted/extended Grade II Listed buildings.
The new uses for the Listed buildings include an Art Gallery, Restaurant and a Supermarket overlooking a new public square created as part of the overall redevelopment. In addition, the former Staff Common Room was restored for its new use as a Gordon Russell Furniture Museum which also looks onto the new square. A Tourist Information Centre was also included.
For many years the site was the Gordon Russell Furniture Factory and was neighbour to the Lygon Arms which at that time was also owned by the Russell Family.
Listed thatched cottages also designed by Gordon Russell were retained and restored as a focal building in the residential part of the development.
The Housing included affordable housing apartments which overlook a new square, some private apartments and townhouses which included the refurbishment of 2 Grade II Listed semi-detached thatched houses designed by Gordon Russell. The scheme was designed to fit in with the existing village setting.
The scheme won a CABE Gold Award in 2007.
